Improvisationalguitarist,turntablistandcomposerOtomoYoshihidewasbornAugust1,1959inYokohama,Japan;thesonofanengineer,asachildhebuilthisownradioandelectronicoscillator,andasateenbegancreatingsoundcollagesbymeansofopen-reeltaperecorders.Duringhighschool,Yoshihideperformedinalocalrockbandbeforemovingontofreejazz,influencedprimarilybysaxophonistKaoruAbeandguitaristMasayukiTakayanagi;whileauniversitystudent,healsobecamefascinatedwithethnicmusic,andin1981trAVeledtoHainan,Chinatoresearchthearea'smusicalculture.UponreturningtoTokyo,YoshihidebeganregularlyperformingfreeimprovisationsetsatthelocalGoodmanclub,althoughhemaintainedarelativelylowprofileuntil1987,whenheappearedinaduowithsaxophonistJunjiHiroseinadditiontoconcurrentstintsinthebandsNoProblemandORT.In1990,YoshihidejoinedbassistKatoHideki'sgroupPlayerPianoandalsoformedhisownnoiserockgroup,GroundZero.From1992to1994,healsoledtheDoubleUnitOrchestra.OtherYoshihide-helmedgroupsoftheperiodincludedMosquitoPaperandSamplingVirusProject;followingthe1998dissolutionofGroundZero,hisworkmovedincreasinglytowardsminimalisminprojectsincludingI.S.O.andFilament.
